Dusting in the Earls’ library Ruby spies a beautiful open book on the Earl’s desk;  written in a mysterious language which seems to move.  This strange hypnotic book fascinates Ruby;  it seems to call to her.   She’s caught holding the book by the Earl. He’s amazed she’s sitting in his chair holding the book.  The Earl believes she could be the one to lift the book‘s curse on his family;  she’s the only one who has ever touched it with bare hands.  He tells Ruby the book‘s evil.  He has Ruby wrap the book in layers of brown paper;  telling her to send it to his solicitor.  Believing he will die soon, he ask Ruby to promise she will burn the book after his death.  So begins a mystery which will enfold Putnam, Ruby, the Earl’s pregnant wife, and the Earl’s brother.

What hold and curse does this book have on the Earl of Bain’s family?  Will Ruby burn the book as she promised?  My Regency romance book reviews of Love In the Moonlight: The Devil’s Book follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Author Isabella Thorne created a tale of curses, an evil book, romance, and family dynamics.  I found Ruby a strong character with moral fiber.  Determined to carry out the Earl’s wishes, she’s willing to lose what she wants most.  The family dynamics included in this tale show jealousy, greed, and the willingness to do anything to process this evil book.

I chose to review the romance story by Kristen Wallace, Loving You At Christmas

STORY-LINE LOVING YOU AT CHRISTMAS BY KRISTEN WALLACE:

Loving You At Christmas, unfortunately, is the last book in the Shellwater Key Tales series.  Former actress and Broadway star Annaliese Matheson features in the finale of this wonderful series.  Annaliese still grieves for her husband Matthew; Annaliese believes she will never love again. Her soul mate’s death left a hole in her soul and heart.  Noticing a handsome, sexy stranger on the beach, Annaliese, begins to wake up from her three-year emotional sleep.

John-Luke “Duke” Evans, famous football star, finds himself raising his four nieces after his sister’s death.  Hot, sexy, and handsome, the women of Shellwater Key pant as he walks by; including the pregnant married ones.  Meeting Annaliese, the attraction is immediate and intense.

Will Duke persuade Annaliese to give him a chance?  Or will Annaliese continue to grieve and mourn; living in the past.  My romance book reviews of Loving You At Christmas follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

I am sad to say Loving You At Christmas, by author Kristen Wallace, ends our sojourn in Shellwater Key, Florida.  A wonderful series of love and happy ever after, this book‘s a perfect ending for the series.  Kristen Wallace filled this story with intense emotion; grief, attraction, love, and romance.

Although a novella, Wallace, created a solid tale which grabs the reader immediately.  With skillful plotting and well-developed characters, Wallace made this novella feel like a full length novel.  I found the pace perfect for the length of the book and her writing flowed well;  making the book easy to read.  Her scenes transition from scene to scene smoothly and with vivid writing I felt the character’s emotions.  My heart broke for Annaliese;  enduring a childhood no child should and then the death of her anchor and soul mate, Matthew, brought tears to my eyes.  I could feel her resistance as she began to care for Duke and his nieces, as well as, Duke’s sorrow at the passing of his beloved sister.  Annaliese must face her fears of losing the ones she loves;  but can she?

Adding the mama drama with the Queen of Shellwater Key, gave the story an extra element.  What a witch Wallace gave us in these booksWallace also included a lot of humor in Loving You At Christmas.  When Layla called in the big guns, I laughed and laughed. By the way, Noah’s the big guns; Shellwater Keys resident soul searcher, advise giver, and counselor to one and all.  Not only does this story have grief, it has a lot of funny snips and snarks.  If I was not laughing, I found myself crying.  I cried buckets at the end of the story.

Kristen Wallace also included characters from the earlier books.  I love a series with continuing characters;  we get an update on their life and all the town gossip.  Loving You At Christmas, is a wonderful romance perfect for anytime of the year.  I would not hesitate to buy this sweet, clean, romance for myself or a friend.  Although sad to say good-bye to my friends in Shellwater Key, I am sure Wallace has another series up her sleeve.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

A Beauty For The Scarred Duke‘s filled with intense emotion and a touch of mysteryBarton skillfully wove into the story-line how Elliot’s scarred;  holding it close to the chest and revealing details only when necessary.  Barton added a touch of  mystery with the ruined tower.  Through descriptive and skillful writing, I could feel Isabella’s fear of Elliot and her evolving regard.  I could see Elliot’s scars and the burned tower.  As well as, his home and the beautiful grounds in my mind’s eye.

Barton slowly developed the bond between Elliot and Isabella.  She gave them time to know each other and accept what could

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Jenna Victoria created two vastly different people in Mollie and Sean.  You know the saying:  “Opposites attract”?  Mollie and Sean feel an instant attraction both try to ignore.  Mollie’s a strong character;  looking for the American dream of security, love, family, and a home.  Creating a small town atmosphere with welcoming neighbors, typical small town attitudes of caring, and  a variety of personalities, Victoria, crafted wonderful secondary characters who enriched the story line.

With past relationship issues, strict work ethics, and principles, Sean’s character will make you laugh, as well as, bring sadness. Giving Sean a battle he’s loosing on all fronts, Victoria then added a crisis or two;  a mysterious time limited codicil, a theft, a never do well, heart breaking accusations, life changing realizations, and a few surprises.

Victoria had more than a few plot lines in Love Among The Lilacs, which she skillfully wove together to form a solid romance bookJenna Victoria‘s scenes transitioned smoothly throughout the book providing an easy to follow multi layered story.  With a satisfying and sigh worthy ending, I closed this book, looking forward to more from author Jenna Victoria.

Weston will find a very determined woman in Song’s small body.  Determined to live in Cody’s small cold cabin, she will not take no for an answer.  For Song came to America for freedom from cages which surrounded her in Thailand; wanting more from life than Thailand would allow.   So begins the journey of Song and Weston as they forge ahead with life.  Song wants freedom, Weston wants to run his ranch and bull ride; but fate has much in store for these two.  As well as, a small town in turmoil and controversy.

One an American by birth, the other wants to be an American by choice.  Will fate bring together two very different people from diverse backgrounds?  An epic drama of conflicts, prejudices, and love.  My contemporary romance book review of Western Song follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

First let me say, my poor skills as a writer and reviewer will not do this heart grabbing, powerful epic, justice.  From the first pages I immediately knew this book would tear out my heart.  At times so sad I cried, others so frustrated with Weston I wanted to scream, I couldn’t put this book down.  Leigh Podgorski created a fast paced tale with many levels and layers, which leaves the reader awed and begging for more.

Filled with yearnings for freedom from prejudice, poverty, and oppression, along with an epic love story, Leigh Podgorski grabs the reader and does not let go. Then add in the guilt Weston carries, the unsung love of another, the drama of the controversy taking over this small town, and the fight to survive, gives you have a story the reader will not quickly forget.

Primarily a historical fiction novel, Maggie Elizabeth Harrington, has a pungent story of loneliness, growing up, questioning the status quo, environmental and moral issues. D. J. Dwykert grabs the reader with historical facts and environmental insights.  As many of the same prejudices about wolves/animals exist today, Dwykert’s plotting highlights the plight of the wolves and the attitudes of then and now.  Consequently, Maggie would be described as an animal rights activist today.

Maggie also faces the prejudice of looking above her station for love in a time period filled with class distinction.  As well as, questioning the teachings or lack of teachings of the church; Maggie’s full of questions.  Dwykert filled Maggie Elizabeth Harrington with well-rounded characters, and pacing which holds the readers attention.

CHARACTERS,  PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Laurie Larsen created an intensely emotional book, as well as, filling the story-line with laughter.  From the first page I was hooked as Larsen sent a frightened, insecure, and awkward Regan out on the auction stage.  What a funny scene she created in the beginning of the story.  The conversations Regan has with herself are hilarious as well as, heart breaking.  At times I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or do both at the same time.

Larsen‘s writing is vivid, crisp, fresh, and clear, as she leads us through this wonderful love story; a love story with many layers.  She had no need of fluff or sex to full the pages;  the story-line held me enthralled as I become involved in the characters lives.  Larsen‘s characters are well-developed and full-bodied with pacing which never slowed.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Reunited In Danger grabbed me from the beginning of the book and did not let go until the last page.  A fast paced tale of vengeance, murder, and secrets, author Carol J. Post crafted a first class story filled with mystery and suspense.  I could relate to their immature behavior, as we all were immature in our teen years of high school.  Post highlights the repercussions of immature behavior with the resulting damage and repercussions which occur.

I found the suspense and mystery addictive as I became involved in the story-line. Then, I found myself asking:  who’s going to be next and what happened on that night long ago?  Post kept the identity of the murderer and secrets close to her chest and did not reveal either until absolutely necessary to the story-line.  What event set the murderer on a trail of vengeance?  Wondering if Amber’s involved and praying not, I impatiently clicked my E reader screen, reading this book straight through as I had to know the answers.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Author Brooke Williams, created an entertaining book in The Leftover.  Having read other books with this story-line, I thought I would not care to read another book with the same old theme.  However, I’m thrilled to say, I loved this book.  Including a variety of personalities, scheming in the background, back stabbing galore, conniving, some good people, some really obnoxious,  arrogant selfish ones, and then to round out the contestants, sweet shy Megan.  Developing each of her characters to their full potential, I found myself hating Andrew;  he’s arrogant, egotistical, and a bully.  What a character Brooke Williams crafted in Andrew.  I wanted to “tell him off” during most of the book.  Other characters you will love;  as each proves they are good people and better friends.

Roger, professional actor in the theater and unconventional, was the bane of his family existence when he left school for the theater.  Bent on never falling in love or marrying, Roger and fate have a date.  For fate has other things in mind for Roger and Margaret.  A laughter filled romp with a touch of mystery through Regency England, my review of Lady Lands The Lord follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

I love cozy mysteries and rarely do I correctly guess who is the murderer.  This book’s no different.  Sotheby crafted a fast-paced book filled with clues, and possible villains.  I found the pacing correct for the length of the book and the characters well-developed.  I loved Albert’s character; he’s a hoot.  Diane and Albert compliment each other.  I enjoyed the snips and snarks they tossed around.  Diane, a motherly caring woman on the surface; far from matronly she has an inquisitive mind and the skill to sort out a mystery.  Including several worthy culprits, and a surprise ending, I found this a good cozy mystery.

When Leaves Fall
When Leaves Fall

STORY-LINE WHEN LEAVES FALL BY C. A. KING:

A short read of 56 pages, When Leaves Fall, is an intense read.  Ralph wakes in a place he does recognize. His vision’s cloudy and he’s disoriented.   Ralph realizes he’s in a poorly constructed shack, and of all things, he’s chained allowing him limited movement. He can vaguely remember his family and he knows they will search for him when they realize what has happened.  For love is a two-way street;  he loves them and they love him.

As days pass, Ralph’s beaten, he’s hungry, cold, in pain, and begins to doubt his memories.  My reviews of contemporary book, When Leaves Fall, follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Do not let the page count of this short book fool you.  Although short in pages, it’s packed with emotion from the first page to the last page; it packs a huge punch and will leave you emotionally spent.  My tears started almost immediately as I read of the abuse Ralph endured from his unknown assailant.  I quickly became emotionally involved in the story-line.  For such a short story, King skillfully packed as much emotion and story into the 56 pages as a lot of writers can produce in a full novel.  It takes skill to produce an intelligent, well-developed, and well-paced story in 56 pages; King managed this feat well.
