Jen feels her boyfriend, Dominic, will support her; expecting him to wait for her return from the show. With a variety of personalities on the show including, handsome Justin, she might win more than she thought.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Although everyone does not like reality shows and care even unless for the participants, I found America’s Next Reality Star an entertaining read. Seeing behind the scene was fascinating and I enjoyed the many personalities at play. As on the real television shows, some of the participates are likeable and others you love to hate. Heffernan filled this story with emotion and action; America’s Next Reality Star’s a past paced read with well-developed characters.
The plot’s great with many threads to bring together before the finale; which Heffernan skillfully crafted. Just as on the real shows, Heffernan brought back the most obnoxious of the eliminated participants. What a piece of work; Heffernan created a dilly of a character. Heffernan added in romance for the those of us who need our daily romance fix. Creating characters, ranging from sweet to scheming with everything in-between, you’ll not be bored. Heffernan added in a few surprises along the way to keep the reader in suspense.
Does Jen win the money she badly needs? I was glad to see Jen…..well, that would a spoiler; you will have to read the book for revelation of this surprise or maybe I should say surprises. In concluding my review of America’s Next Reality Star, I found a well constructed story-line, with fast pacing, and skillfully crafted character personalities. CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
I lovecozy mysteries and rarely do I correctly guess who is the murder. This book’s no different. Sotheby crafted a fast-paced book filled with clues, and possible villains. I found the pacing correct for the length of the book and the characters well-developed. I love Albert’s characters; he’s a hoot. Diane and Albert compliment each other. I enjoyed the snips and snarks they tossed around. Diane, a motherly caring woman on the surface; far from matronly she has an inquisitive mind and the skill to sort out a mystery. Come along with Anne as she finds her the place her soul’s meant to be. My romance book review of The Refuge follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
The Refuge, an intense journey of self-discovery and new love, grabbed my attention immediately. Heidi Martin created a story-line which explores the human condition. Without favoring any one religion, Martin, in-cooperates the essence of self-awareness, acceptance, and forgiveness; first we must learn to forgive ourselves before we can forgive others.
A short read of 56 pages, When Leaves Fall, is an intense read. Ralph wakes in a place he does recognize. His vision’s cloudy and he’s disoriented. Ralph realizes he’s in a poorly constructed shack, and of all things, he’s chained allowing him limited movement. He can vaguely remember his family and he knows they will search for him when they realize what has happened. For love is a two-way street; he loves them and they love him.
Do not let the page count of this short book fool you. Although short in pages, it’s packed with emotion from the first page to the last page; it packs a huge punch and will leave you emotionally spent. My tears started almost immediately as I read of the abuse Ralph endured from his unknown assailant. I quickly became emotionally involved in the story-line. For such a short story, King skillfully packed as much emotion and story into the 56 pages as a lot of writers can produce in a full novel. It takes skill to produce an intelligent, well-developed, and well-paced story in 56 pages; King managed this feat well.

First I must say, I found the main character, Hannah Monroe, whiny and insecure. I understand her stress, shock, and heart-break, however, most people would immediately call the cops. That said, I enjoyed the suspense, and twist and turns as Hannah began her search for Matt; it all made sense as the plot’s revealed.
Making Mom Mad returns to Celebration and the latest love story’s between Corrine and Nolan. Corrine, as a single mother of an active five-year old son, is out of her depth. She has stretched herself to the limit with nursing school, a full-time job, and raising Tommy. She has little patience or time for Tommy.
Nolan, who has loved Corrine from afar for years, watches as she screams and scolds Tommy continuously. Although he tries to help Corrine, everything that comes out of his mouth makes her mad. He takes two steps toward and three steps back. Will Nolan ever find a way to show Corrine how much she and Tommy mean to him? Will Corrine ever see what she is doing to Tommy? Is romance in the air for these two? My reviews for romance novel, Making Mom Mad, follows.
CHARACTER, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Firstly, if you have not visited the small town of Celebration, you have missed a treat. Each book features two characters falling in love and their trials and tribulations and, of course, the citizens of Celebration, Pennsylvania. Book 6 of the
If you find yourself intrigued by serial killers and fascinated by murder investigations, you probably love police procedurals. And if you also like getting inside the mind of a killer, exploring the dark and disturbing side of humanity, and you are an avid reader—or even if you only pick up a book a few times a year, actually!—you’ve met your match with my Brandon Fisher FBI series.
This serial-killer series isn’t like all the others out there in today’s entertainment world, though. When it came to writing this series, I wanted to do something unique, not only to make it stand out but to challenge myself and my readers. I wanted to dig deeper by tapping into the mindset of serial killers, and I wanted to do so with a rookie agent, not a veteran. Books in the mystery genre often depict a tough, seasoned detective or agent as the protagonist. I decided to flip that on its head and experience what it’s like to be a brand-new FBI agent.
In the first book in the series, Eleven, Brandon Fisher takes on his inaugural case with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and learns that an investigation can get personal quickly. In fact, he even comes to fear for his life and that of his wife’s. Readers witness him being trained by his veteran boss, Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper, and get a front-row seat to his dealing with the heinous murders and the emotions he must deal with as a rookie.
As the series progresses, Brandon becomes more experienced, and he finds that nothing much surprises him anymore.
“With each new case, I wondered how the next would top the last, but somehow they always came to us more gruesome and depraved than the previous.” – FBI Agent Brandon Fisher
Readers will find in Remnants an action packed suspenseful crimenovel. Set in Georgia, the FBI’s investigating a series of horrible murders. A serial killer’s handy work is appearing in the Little Ogeechee River.
Brandon, Zach, Jack, and Paige are back in action. FBI agents and profilers with the BAU, they must build a profile on this killer. With missing limbs, painted blue bodies, and missing hearts, they believe they have ferreted out the killers reasoning. Or have they?
Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold. She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.
Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life as a mystery author.
When you first begin writing a new book, is your main focus on the characters or the plot?
I’d have to say it’s really a blend of both. I approach writing a book without an outline and with merely an idea of the storyline. Oftentimes, I don’t even know the identity of the killer until my characters work through the investigation. Both the characters and the plot are strengthened through the editing process.
Why do you write within your chosen genre?
I love the logical progression and intrigue that goes with the mystery genre. The fact that I love to read mysteries and watch crime dramas has also made writing in the genre only a matter of time.
How much research goes into your fiction writing? What is your approach?
As an author of police and FBI procedurals, a lot of research goes into each of my books. I need to know how real life police or FBI would handle situations, have an understanding of forensics and weapons, as well as a grasp of the human aspect—the interaction between departments of law enforcement and within a department.
I’m grateful to have contacts from law enforcement who are generous in sharing their wisdom and experience with me.
Is there a time of day or night when you’re most creative?

Exclusive Interview with FBI Agent Brandon Fisher
FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher caught up with me after closing his most recent case in Savannah, Georgia. While the full story can be found in the book Remnants by Carolyn Arnold, he’s here today to give us a little insight into what everyone can expect from this investigation.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and give us an overview of the investigation in Savannah?
My name is Brandon Fisher, and I’m a special agent with the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit. I work closely with three other agents: Paige Dawson, Zach Miles, and our boss, Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper. While I’m just a few months past my two-year probationary period with the team, I must say, each case seems to be more heinous than the last. And our recent investigation was no exception.
As you mentioned, it took us to Savannah, Georgia. We were called in when human body parts surfaced in the Little Ogeechee River and turned out to be from three different victims. To make things even more complicated, there wasn’t a clear MO or victimology that we could determine. We got some leads, though, when a torso painted blue and missing its heart was found.
I wish I could say that was the worst of it, but things just got creepier from there. If only I could unsee some of things I’ve witnessed in my short career as an FBI agent…
Now I’m curious about what you’ve seen! Will you share a little with me?
I can, but only if you have a strong stomach and don’t mind lying awake at night!
Very well, but don’t say I didn’t warn you… I’ve seen decapitations, bodies where victims’ intestines were removed, the death of a

In the Mind of a Serial Killer
“A well-written psychological thriller. Told in part through the murderer’s eyes, we really get the feel of what a serial killer is like.” –Juniper Grove on Blue Baby
BY CAROLYN ARNOLD
Do serial killers and the FBI fascinate you? Do you like getting inside the minds of killers, or love being creeped out, sleeping with your eyes open, and feeling like you’re involved in murder investigations? Then the Brandon Fisher FBI series is for you! Join FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team with the Behavioral Analysis Unit in their hunt for serial killers.
Each book in the series takes the reader inside the mind of a serial killer and uncovers his or her thought process and motivation. Each book also follows the execution of torture on the victims and their murders. And of course, each book preys on society’s fascination with serial killers.
Please enjoy the following excerpt from Chapter 12 of Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI series):
Killing was the best sedative. Just knowing that the time was coming had allowed him to fall asleep the second his head had hit the pillow last night, and now the clock on his nightstand told him it was almost noon.
He got out of bed and opened the curtains, letting the sun spill in and blanket him in its warm glow. Closing his eyes, he bathed in its splendor. His breath was calm and deep as he got down onto his knees and spread his arms heavenward, giving thanks for not just another day but for the blessing of life. Not his, but what would be the beginning of another offering.

Why Serial-Killer Fiction Isn’t Going Anywhere
BY CAROLYN ARNOLD
Years ago, a rumor circulated in the writing community that books about serial killers were passé. I didn’t buy it, though. Had any of these writers picked up a mystery book or watched popular shows on television? Serial killers were everywhere! And still are.
The truth is, many people have a morbid fascination with serial killers and want to know what makes them tick, to try to understand them. While people certainly have sympathy for the victims, this addiction to serial-killer fiction, if you will, is similar to that of a motorist who can’t stop looking at the car crash on the side of the road. They are drawn to watch, and let’s face it: death connects all of us. That may sound morbid, but we all face death and loss eventually.
We also know that serial killers exist in the world around us, and the threat is real. In fact, a former chief of the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit noted, “A very conservative estimate is that there are between twenty-five and fifty active serial killers in the United States” at any given time. The truth is, you may even be in contact with one without knowing it. And as it is with any piece of fiction, books involving serial killers take us into the world of the what-if. But it goes further than that: it plays up our fears and

Writing Serial-Killer Fiction
BY CAROLYN ARNOLD
The world seems to be uniquely fascinated and captivated by the mystery of serial killers. What motivates them to kill, and why do they choose certain people to be their victims? As fiction writers, we need to harness that intrigue, but we also should be very careful not to allow our work and characters to become cliché. That feat is certainly a tough one—especially since most stories have already been written!—but it can be done. It’s all about making your work extraordinary by creating your own distinct slant and personalized voice. And let’s not forget that it’s up to you to make sure your storytelling is superb.
But there’s even more to it than good writing and coming up with a unique motivation and method of operation (MO) for your serial killer. You also have to know how your investigator is going to realistically look at the case. You want to portray your main character—for example, an FBI agent—as following and working through the investigative process the way one would if he or she was living and breathing. If you don’t, you risk losing your reader, not only for that book but possibly for future ones, too.
So where do you begin when you want to write this kind of fiction? Let’s start with what constitutes a serial killer. The basic
Behind The Scenes set in New York high society, is filled with laughter, fun, and mystery. Permilia Griswold, wall flower of the society set, hides on the fringes of the ballrooms. Born to a miner who stroke it rich, part of the new wealthy of New York, Permilia is a step out of time with the high society’s gentility. Thrifty, smart, and awkward, Permilia and her step-mother are ever at odds as Permilia stumbles and humbles her way through society.
During one of her escapades, she hears a murder plot against Asher Rutherford. Permilia’s determined to save him from himself when he does not take her warning seriously. While behind the scenes, much more’s going on. Come along with Permilia, Asher, and company as they ferret out the latest secrets and plots. My reviews of romance novel, Behind The Scenes, follows.
Not only is Behind The Scenes a fine romance, it has a lot of humor; I laughed repeatedly at the antics of Permilia Griswold. Seeing high society from her perspective was refreshing. Permilia’s awkward, uncoordinated, and let’s face it, walks to the beat of a different drummer. As a result, she and others like her, the ones not as pretty or poised, or like Permilia hear a different drummer, find themselves the wall flowers of the balls. How hurtful this must have been for the girls who did not have Permilia’s fortitude. Does this bother Permilia? Not in the least as she has other dreams and ambitions.
Although classified as a romantic suspense novel, the reader finds much more in Audrey’s Promise. Author Susan Sheehey filled this novel with emotion, suspense, and intrigue. Audrey Allen’s poised at the pinnacle of success. Running for senate in the great state of Texas, if elected Audrey, aka the Peacemaker, would be the youngest member elected. Supporting the establishment/funding for a much-needed crisis center as well as running for office, Audrey has a busy life.

All he has to do, is discover the Peacemaker’s dirty secrets, write the article of a lifetime which will sabotage her political campaign, and his boat will sail into the New York Times. He knows she cannot really be as squeaky clean as she appears; after finagling an invitation to her small home town family Thanksgiving, he is ready to strike.
Things heat up as Ethan and Audrey face off. The family is not happy in the Biddinger household nor is

Spending time with his grandmother and his son, Bridget is very different from Rashid’s other guest. Rashid begins to wonder if she’s for real, or is it an act to ingratiate herself to him.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Author Barbara McMahon once again created a solid entertaining romance. As a result, I read A Sheikh Of Her Own straight through. McMahon skillfully created an easy to read clean book. Her writing alone carries the story without the
In Abbey’s Tale, author Katherine McDermott created a clean sweet romance. Set in a small fishing village, the community’s tight-knit. Jeremy McKetcheon, an Irish immigrant, is the light-keeper for the local lighthouse. Horribly disfigured on one side of his face during the civil war, Jeremy has what we know as PTSD. With nightly nightmares and flash backs of the battles, Jeremy hides on the island with his lighthouse duties and wood craving.
Abigail Morrison, AKA Abbey, blind from birth lives in the main village with her father who is postmaster. Abby lives through the wood cravings her father brings from the lighthouse keeper. Beautiful pieces which expand Abbey’s world. Pestering her father to meet the carver who so lovingly creates the pieces, they start journeying across the water just before a storm. As fate would have it, their boat capsizes and Jeremy must do his best to save them. Neither of them knew how a simple trip and an act of rescue would change their lives. My reviews for romance novel, Abbey’s Tale, follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Firstly, let me say, how much I enjoyed this book. In Abbey’s Tale we find two needy people who come together to save each other. Jeremy saved her from the sea, and Abbey saved him from himself. Secondly, I loved the fact McDermott gave both of her characters such wonderful personalities and morals.
Jeremy’s guilt ridden and Abbey’s alone in a dark world; will these two forge a relationship built on caring?

Bryant has life by the tail; a beautiful lover he loves, he’s loved in return, a best friend who’s also his partner, and a successful career. Then fate turns the tables on him and changes his wonderful life.

Grab the tissue box as you begin this wonderfully crafted contemporary fiction. Croissants and Corruption takes place in the small town of North Bank, Virginia. On the shore of the Potomac River, just far enough from the maddening crowds of Washington, D. C., everyone is friendly and feels safe from crime. Widow Margot Durand owns The Parisian Patisserie, a fine french bakery.
Widow of a police officer, Margot can’t resist a good mystery. Shortly she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Receiving a call from her sister who’s at the end of her rope with her daughter Taylor, Margot agrees to take the 19-year-old for the summer. To say Taylor is not happy getting up at 3:00 AM to work in a bakery is an under statement.
Taylor and Margot find themselves in the middle of a murder almost upon Taylor’s arrival in North Bank. Their pushy flirty waiter attacks Taylor and then later that night’s stabbed to death. Suspicious of Taylor’s involvement, Detective Adam Eastwood, a long time friend of Margot’s deceased husband, must determine if Taylor’s guilty of murder.
A lot is going on in North Bank; the seniors need a new community building and are rising funds, the mayor is running for re-election, money is missing from the seniors funds, and a murder’s committed. Maybe North Bank is not as quite as the citizens thought.
Firstly, I must say Croissants and Corruption’s an easy entertaining read suitable for a pleasant afternoon of relaxing reading. Secondly, containing the standard cozy mystery format of strong female character, small friendly town, and a murder, Author D. Collins crafted a first-class cozy mystery.
Margot’s character’s strong and independent, ready to help anyone, and always ready with a box of baked goods. With an inquisitive mind, Margot’s determination to clear her niece is strong; she won’t let anything stop her, including Detective Eastwood. Eastwood’s character’s smart, determined, and fair in his judgements and evaluations. Smart and savvy, Margot manages all the irons she has in the fire with skill, from looking into the missing senior funds to proving Taylor’s innocence. Collins portrayal of nineteen year old Taylor was classic immature teenager. Watching her grow by the end of the story was wonderful.
Finally, in concluding my cozy mystery novel review of Croissants and Corruption, I found the pace of the book in line with the length of the story, Collins writing’s clear, clean, and easy to follow with smooth scene transitions and believable characters. With a cast of secondary characters, Collins added depth to the story. Her portrayal of small town USA was spot on. Furthermore, Collins included twists and turns, which hold the reader’s attention. Containing no sex, Croissants and Corruption is suitable for anyone who enjoys a solid story-line.
CROISSANTS AND CORRUPTION RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
In addition, I would not hesitate to buy this book for my self or a friend.
