AN UNCIVILIZED ROMANCE BY ELLIEE ATKINSON:

Sarah Engels had known only love and caring until she married Jason.  Courting her with care and love, Jason’s true colors surfaced shortly after their marriage.  The abuse which followed unending and unceasing, peaked one fateful day.  Jason refuses to have children and blames Sarah when she becomes pregnant.  He’s determined to rid Sarah of the unborn baby.  How far will he go?

Michael Collins, aka, Mike lives in the high mountains, mourning his beloved wife, Rachel.  He’s become a hermit; avoiding the towns including his own brother.  Knowing he must resupply his supplies, he reluctantly heads to town.  Mike finds a gravely injured woman.   Seriously injured and near death, this gravely injured woman comes to mean more to Mike than he ever thought possible.  After all, his heart belongs to Rachel.   Fate has stepped in and has much in store for Mike and Sarah.  Will she and her unborn baby survive her injuries and infection?  Will love bloom between these two?  Does Jason discover his abused wife’s alive?  My romance book reviews of An Uncivilized Romance follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

What a story author Elliee Atkinson created in book two of the Family Of Love Series.  Author Elliee Atkinson faced the horror of physical and mental abuse head on.  With vivid writing, the reader feels Sarah’s desperation and pain as she’s abused by Jason.  I could feel her fear and disgust of him;  she can’t understand how he fooled her so well.  Elliee Atkinson skillfully displayed each emotion in her writing.  As Atkinson matured Sarah’s characters, I could see her growing and becoming more independent and secure;  opening up to the opportunity for a good loving man in her life.

Colors Of Christmas

Colors Of Christmas has two contemporary clean Christian stories by author Olivia Newport.

STORY-LINES COLORS OF CHRISTMAS:  CHRISTMAS IN GOLD AND CHRISTMAS IN BLUE BY OLIVIA NEWPORT:

In Colors of Christmas first story, Christmas In Gold, we find Astrid.  At eighty, she has lived a full and sometimes tragic life.  She survived the Nazi’s, a brutal life in war-torn Germany, the loss of two husbands, and raised two children alone.  Now she finds herself in an assisted living facility;  her home sold, recovering from a broken leg, and her precious gold ornaments missing.  Those ornament had survived a long history of war, property, and moves; until this last move to the facility.  Astrid also finds her physical therapist, Carly, bordering on desperation, in need of a friend and hope.  What better time for hope than Christmas;   for God gave the world the greatest hope of all at Christmas time in our Lord and Savior.

In Christmas Blue, we find Angela in need of Christmas spirit.  Deeply depressed and still mourning the death of her best friend and Christmas enthusiast, Carol, Angela finds herself in charge of the town’s Christmas To Remember event.  This is the last thing she wants to do.  With no way to get out of the job, she forges on without enthusiasm.  How can she possibly do the job, Carol was so perfect at performing each year.  Carol always had surprises galore for the crowd and worked all year preparing.  Angela had only eight days to get into the Christmas spirit and make this a Christmas honoring Carol.  When the mysterious Gabe arrives in town, he stirs things up. Will Angela finally recover from her depression and create a Christmas to remember?

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Olivia Newport created two stories filled with emotion and faith.  In Christmas In Gold Newport established a strong lead character in Astrid;  a woman who had experienced the worse man can hand out and through her faith in God, survived.  This is not a feel good, Christmas is light and airy, story.  This story’s filled with the emotion of survival under the conditions of war

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Once again author Jo Huddleston created a well-written, clean, sweet, romance, in Betty’s BlessingHuddleston‘s created quite a character in Betty;  funny, snarky, and opinionated.  She’s doesn’t mind stating her opinion.  However, Betty’s immature when it comes to relationships;  always expecting the worse. CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

In Driven To Death, author Elleby Harper created a novel filled with mystery, suspense, and police proceduralHarper hooked me from the first pages of her book.  As she skillfully build the suspense and mystery, I could not read fast enough to satisfy my need to know.  With a multi-layered plot and well-developed characters of varying personalities, this book is a first- rate crime story.

Elleby Harper created differing outlooks, manner of dress, personalities, and investigative techniques, for Bex’s team members.  I found Quinn a riot;  I didn’t know whether to hate him or love him.  Jealous of the American placed in a position he thought he should have received, his snarks and snips at Bex will make you laugh and then, make you want to shake him.  I loved the nerdy personality of Reuben, a former real estate salesman, who suddenly finds himself a trainee DC on the Youth Crimes Team under command of Bex.  The wrinkled seasoned warrior Eli, and stylish Idris, round out the team.

Penny Hands I Passed Through Things I Saw Stories I Can Tell

STORY-LINE PENNY HANDS I PASSED THROUGH THINGS I SAW STORIES I CAN TELL BY PETER DAVIDSON

In Penny Hands I Passed Through Things I Saw Stories I Can Tell, the story’s told by the one-cent piece or as it prefers to be called, Pennytold in the first person, explaining its genders neither male or female, rather the penny‘s gender neutral.  Born on October 22, 1982, in Denver Colorado, it has had an illustrious history;  It’s the last 95% copper penny made.  This one-cent piece, aka penny, traveled everywhere, met people from all walks of life, and played a part in many dramas.

This is Penny‘s story.  The story of its birth, who it meet, when they meet, and how it traveled on to the next situation.   Then sometimes it’s left laying in the street or on a table, any of a thousand places a single penny ends up.  Penny ended up in a lot of places;  the jar of a hoarder, at the bank, in a little boy’s pocket, in a shoe, and many more.

Peter Davidson created a funny read about the lowly penny which really is not so lowly after all. For one hundred make a dollar, fifty make fifty cent and so on.  Where would we be without this shiny jewel?  It has seen it all and heard it all from its place of prominence;  either the purse, pocket, the street, or ashtray.  The places it has been are hilariously funny and sometimes irreverent.   Penny met a variety of people and heard many stories of life, love, and crisis;  seeing everything in between.  From pop stars, salesmen, to church offering plates.  It met a secret romance writer, laid in a guitar case, and traveled to Los Vegas and sunny California.  This wonderful penny even met Jim Bob and Billy Ray, Southerners to the core.  It met too many to name and in each place there’s a story.

Through subterfuge, Clare begins her matchmaking, then sits back and watches as the game begins.  My romance book reviews of Addison Falls In Love follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Although an author can not develop a book with the depth of its parent, the novel, Audra Bell skillfully wove an interesting and entertaining story.  I could feel Addison’s dejection, as well as, her budding interest in Michael.  However, diving back into the dating game can be stressful for all concerned.  Addison and Michael had past relationships which did not end well and were leery of involvement. However, with conveniently missed trips and no shows by Clare, Addison and Michael find themselves together more and more.  I guessed Clare had a hand in all the convenient meetings.  Does Clare have a budding career as a matchmaker?  Perhaps, we will have to wait and see.

STORY-LINE GIRL OF GREAT PRICE BY MILO JAMES FOWLER:

Private Investigator Charlie Madison’s, in the thick of things in Girl Of Great Price.  A crime noir set in the future, Madison’s hired to find a young kidnapped Japanese girl.  Knowing if he doesn’t find her within 48 hours, she’ll probably be dead, Madison takes the case.

What Madison finds defies imagination, even in a world run by Russian mobsters and mandroids. My book review of Girl of Great Price follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Milo James Fowler‘s short story, Girl of Great Price, reminds the reader of hard-boiled 1940’s television P.I. shows.  However, Madison has heart in a world which destroyed itself with global madness of war and environmental excess.  Milo James Fowler created a hero for a time which needed all the hero’s it could find.

Fowler held the mystery of the girl close to his chest and did not reveal the why, where, what, and when until necessary.  A short read of fifty-one pages, Fowler, packed the pages full of action and suspense.  Fowler’s scenes transitioned smoothly and his writing flowed well.  With fast paced action and an intriguing story-line, devotees of crime noir will love Milo James Fowler‘s Charlie Madison and the Girl of Great Price.  Although not my tea of cup, I can appreciate the skill with which Fowler crafted this story; giving it 4 stars for composition, structure, development, and pacing.

Carly Morgan created a sweet inspirational romance in Most Eligible Cowboy.  With skillful writing and well-developed characters, Morgan held my attention from the first pages.  Including misunderstandings, family dynamics, sweet clean romance, and a bunch of opportunistic determined women, Morgan’s story-line’s light and easy to read.  Her scenes transition smoothly from scene to scene and her writing flows well.  Furthermore, the pacing of the story’s in line with the length of book.

Jackson’s a typical cowboy; strong, determined, steady, family oriented, and not sure he wants a relationship.  Carly Morgan skillfully showed second chances at love are as good, if not better, than the first.  I found myself laughing as his phone rang off the hook and the determined ladies chased him with a vengeance.   I loved Maya’s character.  Carly Morgan matured her outlook and opened her heart to the possibility of a second chance at love.  Including the strong love of family and the grief of losing someone you love, added extra elements to the story.  Adding in a child to the mix, was wonderful, as she will win your heart immediately.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

The Sweet Grove Series by author Emily Murdoch grabs the reader immediately as Murdoch penned an emotional heart grabbing tale of second chances, forgiveness, and love.  How sad the only option open for a fallen woman in 1841 is to prostitute herself for survival.  I felt Kitty’s desperation and sorrow in the house of prostitution.  While Thomas feels shame for his past and the things he did to his family; each emotion’s pungent.  Murdoch‘s descriptive writing’s vivid; I could see the people, the smell the odors, and feel the emotions of Thomas and Kitty.

The Secret Life of Book Club

STORY-LINE THE SECRET LIFE OF BOOK CLUB BY HEATHER WOODHAVEN:

In The Secret Life of Book Club, four neighbors formed a book club two years ago. Living life day-to-day, same old, same old, Jeanine decides to mix things up.  Suggesting each week, rather than read about adventure, they should participate in an adventure.  Something each woman had wanted and never done.  So, Anne, Paula, Jeanine, and Kate set out on an adventure of renewal, discovery, and perhaps, deep lasting friendship.  But things will become complicated before long as family dynamics and relationships come into play.  My inspirational romance book reviews of The Secret Life Of Book Club follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Heather Woodhaven created an intensely introspective story in The Secret Life Of Book Club.  Each woman’s family, dreams, past, and problems, high-lighted skillfully by Woodhaven, made a book I could not put down.  The four find, although neighbors and members of the same neighborhood book club, they did not really know each other.  Whether single mothers, harassed mothers, divorced, or just plain taken for granted, each woman will find encouragement, renewal, and companionship.   They find the rut they’re stick in, is no more;  they learn to live life rather than exist day-to-day in the endless round of domesticity.

At times funny, I laughed out loud;  then other times in tears, as Woodhaven skillfully developed the story-line.  Heather Woodhaven aptly penned the rut we can all get into as we journey through marriage and friendship;  life can become dull, boring, and the same day after day as we battle through.  Woodhaven skillfully shows there is much more to life and we should live life to the fullest each day.  Live to the fullest, these ladies do, as they try things I never would have thought about.  But at home family dynamics came in to play;  drama, male mid-life crisis, taco trucks, police chases, decisions made that can not be unmade, and so much more.  Woodhaven skillfully matured and renewed the characters through it all as she packed this story with emotion;  revealing secrets, ambitions, and forming lasting bonds.

STORM OF ATTRACTION BY LILY BLACK:

Alexa Wolving, black belt martial arts instructor at night and librarian by day, has a full life without men.  Five years previously, Drew Cosimo, Army Ranger, broke her heart.  Since then, her principle’s simple:  never give men a second chance.  But that trusty rule’s about to be tested.  Drew Casimo, has come back to Willowdale;  opening a karate school in competition with Crouching Tiger.

Angry, determined to ignore Drew, and all he stands for, Alexa will find fate’s her master.  For Alexa has a stalker bent on having her at all costs.  Drew and Alexa are drawn together as the stalker comes closer and closer.   My suspense romance book reviews of Storm Of Attraction follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Storm Of Attraction‘s filled with suspense, mystery, emotion, and romance.  A fast paced read, it grabs the reader immediately and does not let go.  Lily Black drew the suspense and mystery out; not revealing the stalker‘s identity until the last possible moment.  What a surprise; I had no idea he was the stalker!  The romance in Storm Of Attraction‘s slow and easy; a sweet romance with heavy kissing, a little grabbing, and intense emotionLilly Black stated: it was given a four on the blush scale. For those of us who do not like descriptive or graphic sex, Storm Of Attraction hits the romance spot.  Black did not rush her characters into a relationship, as Alexa has issues she must resolve. Will she ever forgive Drew?  You will have to read the book to find out.

I loved Alexa’s character; strong, determined, independent, and caring.  As Black developed and matured Alexa, I could feel her confusion, anger, and questioning.  While Drew is uncertain of his feelings, he can not help his attraction to Alexa.  He’s a strong man with morals and principles;  a man of honor who matured and regrets his past actions with Alexa.

With a mixture of romance, suspense, mystery, and martial arts, Storm of Attraction‘s a solid well-written book.  Also, Black included secondary characters which enrich the story-line.  Black‘s characterization and creation of the stalker‘s truly vile; I rooted for him to get his ” just desserts”.  What a sick man Lily Black skillfully crafted.  Black‘s writing’s solid, easy to follow, and her scenes transition smoothly from scene to scene.  With an explosive ending, you will close this book with satisfaction.  A perfect read for a lazy afternoon in your favorite chair with a beverage by your side.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Jenna Victoria created two vastly different people in Mollie and Sean.  You know the saying:  “Opposites attract”?  Mollie and Sean feel an instant attraction both try to ignore.  Mollie’s a strong character;  looking for the American dream of security, love, family, and a home.  Creating a small town atmosphere with welcoming neighbors, typical small town attitudes of caring, and  a variety of personalities, Victoria, crafted wonderful secondary characters who enriched the story line.

With past relationship issues, strict work ethics, and principles, Sean’s character will make you laugh, as well as, bring sadness. Giving Sean a battle he’s loosing on all fronts, Victoria then added a crisis or two;  a mysterious time limited codicil, a theft, a never do well, heart breaking accusations, life changing realizations, and a few surprises.

Victoria had more than a few plot lines in Love Among The Lilacs, which she skillfully wove together to form a solid romance bookJenna Victoria‘s scenes transitioned smoothly throughout the book providing an easy to follow multi layered story.  With a satisfying and sigh worthy ending, I closed this book, looking forward to more from author Jenna Victoria.

I found Jenna Victoria‘s writing clear and easy to follow with well-developed characters.  The plot has several layers which grab and hold the reader‘s attention in this short fast paced romance.   Suitable for anyone who enjoys a sweet clean romance, Love Among Lilacs‘ is perfect for a lazy afternoon read.  I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend.

One an American by birth, the other wants to be an American by choice.  Will fate bring together two very different people from diverse backgrounds?  An epic drama of conflicts, prejudices, and love.  My contemporary romance book review of Western Song follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

First let me say, my poor skills as a writer and reviewer will not do this heart grabbing, powerful epic, justice.  From the first pages I immediately knew this book would tear out my heart.  At times so sad I cried, others so frustrated with Weston I wanted to scream, I couldn’t put this book down.  Leigh Podgorski created a fast paced tale with many levels and layers, which leaves the reader awed and begging for more.

Filled with yearnings for freedom from prejudice, poverty, and oppression, along with an epic love story, Leigh Podgorski grabs the reader and does not let go. Then add in the guilt Weston carries, the unsung love of another, the drama of the controversy taking over this small town, and the fight to survive, gives you have a story the reader will not quickly forget.

CHARACTERS,  PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Laurie Larsen created an intensely emotional book, as well as, filling the story-line with laughter.  From the first page I was hooked as Larsen sent a frightened, insecure, and awkward Regan out on the auction stage.  What a funny scene she created in the beginning of the story.  The conversations Regan has with herself are hilarious as well as, heart breaking.  At times I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or do both at the same time.

Larsen‘s writing is vivid, crisp, fresh, and clear, as she leads us through this wonderful love story; a love story with many layers.  She had no need of fluff or sex to full the pages;  the story-line held me enthralled as I become involved in the characters lives.  Larsen‘s characters are well-developed and full-bodied with pacing which never slowed.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Author Brooke Williams, created an entertaining book in The Leftover.  Having read other books with this story-line, I thought I would not care to read another book with the same old theme.  However, I’m thrilled to say, I loved this book.  Including a variety of personalities, scheming in the background, back stabbing galore, conniving, some good people, some really obnoxious,  arrogant selfish ones, and then to round out the contestants, sweet shy Megan.  Developing each of her characters to their full potential, I found myself hating Andrew;  he’s arrogant, egotistical, and a bully.  What a character Brooke Williams crafted in Andrew.  I wanted to “tell him off” during most of the book.  Other characters you will love;  as each proves they are good people and better friends.
