EXCERPT: LORD OF PLEASURE

“Lady X, I presume?” His heart was still pounding and his breath a bit too quick, but he’d made it. He was the first at her side.
“Lord X.” Her red lips smiled up at him from beneath her impenetrable black mask. “It’s a pleasure to see you again.”
“The pleasure is most definitely mine.” He proffered his arm. “Come with me.”
“Should I?” she rejoined archly.
“I shall beg if I must.”
Only when her fingers curved about his elbow did his tense muscles finally relax.
He guided her up the slender staircase lining the far wall. When they reached the upper promenade, he led her not to the balcony overlooking the back garden, but to a hidden corridor with a second, smaller staircase, twisting up a dark tower.
She tilted her head. “What’s up there?”
“Come and find out.” He stepped into the darkness, held out his hand, and waited.
She placed her white-gloved fingers in his.
“I’ve been thinking of you all week,” he said roughly. “It’s been maddening.”
“Why didn’t you stop?”
“I can’t.” He pulled her into his arms and slanted his mouth over hers.
The last time he’d kissed her, he’d felt she was holding back on her passion. He didn’t want her to. Not with him. Not tonight. He cradled the side of her face in his hand and told her with every kiss that there was no need for circumspection. No need to be tentative.
Whoever she was before she stepped through the vestibule door, here she was a goddess cloaked in darkness and sheltered by the night. They were as anonymous as stars in the sky, their passion as bright. Her power was boundless. With naught more than the taste of her kiss, she was capable of bringing him to his knees.
Heart pounding, he pulled away while he still could.

Four Separate Short Stories From The Pen Of Suzette Vaughn; Published Individually

STORY-LINES:

In Radio Wish, author Suzette Vaughn crafted a wonderful Christmas wish for someone other than them-self.  Unselfishly the caller to the local Christmas Wish Radio Show makes a wish for her neighbor.

In A Good Day, Vaughn crafted a story of two shy people who travel the same path daily.   Each attracted to other and too shy to make their desire known.

Slither finds a girl discovering her origins are not what she thought nor her father the man she believed.

The fourth story, Reflections, we find two friends in the future who are seers.  Their job is to see disasters in the future and try to stop them from occurring.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Firstly, I found each of these stories enjoyable and satisfying.  Due to the short length of the genre, the author can not give the reader the amount of detail, background, or development found in novels.   In a

STORY-LINE THE BEGINNING OF FOREVER BY SEVEN STEPS:

The Beginning of Forever takes place at the high school prom.  Sophia Johnson, refuses to let her cousin Quincey miss his senior prom when his date’s incapacitated.  Schooled at a private religious school and overly sheltered by her devout mother, Sophia’s excited to finally be at a dance even though her mother has no idea she is attending.

When she meets Josiah Walker, captain of the football team, she’s instantly smitten.  He’s handsome, polite, and interesting, with a sad air about him. Where is his date?  What happened to her and why is he so sad?  My reviews of romance novel, The Beginning Of Forever, follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

The Beginning Of Forever’s a short story/novella of about 22 printed pages.  Due to the length of short stories/novella, authors are unable to develop the story-line, plot, or characters, to the degree authors of full novels can.  However, I found this book a good beginning for a series of short stories/novellas.  I found the story-line interesting with a touch of mystery added to spice up things.  This is a clean sweet story with the beginnings of a romance between two young

Angus Trust By Linda Hubalek

GROOMS OF HONOR BOOK 1

Angus Trust, Grooms of Honor By Linda Hubalek
Angus Trust, Cover

STORY-LINE ANGUS TRUST BY LINDA HUBALEK:

Angus Trust is book 1 in the Grooms of Honor Series.  Having followed Nolan and Elof in earlier books as they found their happy ever after, Hubalek takes us back to Clear Creek.  Angus is the eldest of Pastor and Kaitlyn Reagan’s sons.  Raised in Clear Creek, Kansas along with five other brothers, he was the only one to take up with the railroad train depot manager; where he developed a love of trains and the rails. He has been a railroad detective for many years following after his love of anything railroad.  After years of detective work for the railroad, he’s beginning to wish for a stationary home with a wife and family.

Daisy Clancy, raised in Clear Creek by her grandparents, owners of the local café, found herself side by side with Angus until the day he left Clear Creek for adventure on the railroad.  Daisy left Clear Creek to get an education and work after Angus left.  To say Angus and Daisy grew up together would be an understatement; they also fell in puppy love; or was it?

Fate has placed Angus and Daisy on the same railroad train headed to Clear Creek when a robbery occurs.  Finding themselves alone at the side of the tracks will memories of old loves return?  My reviews of romance novel, Angus Trust, follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Firstly, let me say what a wonderful cast of characters Hubalek’s imagination created for the Grooms of Honor Series.  As I began reading Angus Trust, I felt I was returning to a beloved town filled with my friends, with everyone waiting to tell me the latest gossip and goings-on.  A close-knit town, the Reagan family, although not of blood relation except two of the six, are examples of family love and unconditional support found in Clear Creek.  Clear Creek’s a place of community, love, and support.  I wondered how many of these small towns dotted the prairie and west.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Author Mary Torjussen crafted an intriguing spine tingling, criminal suspense novel in her first offering to readers, Gone Without A Trace.  First I must say, I found the main character, Hannah Monroe, whiny and insecure.  I understand her stress, shock, and heart-break, however, most people would immediately call the cops.  That said, I enjoyed the suspense, and twist and turns as Hannah began her search for Matt;  it all made sense as the plot’s revealed.

Why read the Brandon Fisher FBI series?

Why read the Brandon Fisher FBI series?

BY CAROLYN ARNOLD

If you find yourself intrigued by serial killers and fascinated by murder investigations, you probably love police procedurals. And if you also like getting inside the mind of a killer, exploring the dark and disturbing side of humanity, and you are an avid reader—or even if you only pick up a book a few times a year, actually!—you’ve met your match with my Brandon Fisher FBI series.

This serial-killer series isn’t like all the others out there in today’s entertainment world, though. When it came to writing this series, I wanted to do something unique, not only to make it stand out but to challenge myself and my readers. I wanted to dig deeper by tapping into the mindset of serial killers, and I wanted to do so with a rookie agent, not a veteran. Books in the mystery genre often depict a tough, seasoned detective or agent as the protagonist. I decided to flip that on its head and experience what it’s like to be a brand-new FBI agent.

In the first book in the series, Eleven, Brandon Fisher takes on his inaugural case with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and learns that an investigation can get personal quickly. In fact, he even comes to fear for his life and that of his wife’s. Readers witness him being trained by his veteran boss, Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper, and get a front-row seat to his dealing with the heinous murders and the emotions he must deal with as a rookie.

As the series progresses, Brandon becomes more experienced, and he finds that nothing much surprises him anymore.

“With each new case, I wondered how the next would top the last, but somehow they always came to us more gruesome and depraved than the previous.” – FBI Agent Brandon Fisher

Guest Interview With Carolyn Arnold, Author of Remnants

Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold. She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.

Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life as a mystery author.

When you first begin writing a new book, is your main focus on the characters or the plot?

I’d have to say it’s really a blend of both. I approach writing a book without an outline and with merely an idea of the storyline. Oftentimes, I don’t even know the identity of the killer until my characters work through the investigation. Both the characters and the plot are strengthened through the editing process.

Why do you write within your chosen genre?

I love the logical progression and intrigue that goes with the mystery genre. The fact that I love to read mysteries and watch crime dramas has also made writing in the genre only a matter of time.

How much research goes into your fiction writing? What is your approach?

As an author of police and FBI procedurals, a lot of research goes into each of my books. I need to know how real life police or FBI would handle situations, have an understanding of forensics and weapons, as well as a grasp of the human aspect—the interaction between departments of law enforcement and within a department.

I’m grateful to have contacts from law enforcement who are generous in sharing their wisdom and experience with me.

Is there a time of day or night when you’re most creative?

An Interview With FBI Profiler Brandon Fisher

REMNANTS BY CAROLYN ARNOLDD
REMNANTS, COVER

Remnants will be released tomorrow, April 11, 2017

Exclusive Interview with FBI Agent Brandon Fisher

FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher caught up with me after closing his most recent case in Savannah, Georgia. While the full story can be found in the book Remnants by Carolyn Arnold, he’s here today to give us a little insight into what everyone can expect from this investigation.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and give us an overview of the investigation in Savannah?

My name is Brandon Fisher, and I’m a special agent with the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit. I work closely with three other agents: Paige Dawson, Zach Miles, and our boss, Supervisory Special Agent Jack Harper. While I’m just a few months past my two-year probationary period with the team, I must say, each case seems to be more heinous than the last. And our recent investigation was no exception.

As you mentioned, it took us to Savannah, Georgia. We were called in when human body parts surfaced in the Little Ogeechee River and turned out to be from three different victims. To make things even more complicated, there wasn’t a clear MO or victimology that we could determine. We got some leads, though, when a torso painted blue and missing its heart was found.

I wish I could say that was the worst of it, but things just got creepier from there. If only I could unsee some of things I’ve witnessed in my short career as an FBI agent…

Now I’m curious about what you’ve seen! Will you share a little with me?

I can, but only if you have a strong stomach and don’t mind lying awake at night!

Try me.

Very well, but don’t say I didn’t warn you… I’ve seen decapitations, bodies where victims’ intestines were removed, the death of a

In the Mind of a Serial Killer

“A well-written psychological thriller. Told in part through the murderer’s eyes, we really get the feel of what a serial killer is like.” –Juniper Grove on Blue Baby

BY CAROLYN ARNOLD

Do serial killers and the FBI fascinate you? Do you like getting inside the minds of killers, or love being creeped out, sleeping with your eyes open, and feeling like you’re involved in murder investigations? Then the Brandon Fisher FBI series is for you! Join FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team with the Behavioral Analysis Unit in their hunt for serial killers.

Each book in the series takes the reader inside the mind of a serial killer and uncovers his or her thought process and motivation. Each book also follows the execution of torture on the victims and their murders. And of course, each book preys on society’s fascination with serial killers.

Please enjoy the following excerpt from Chapter 12 of Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI series):

Killing was the best sedative. Just knowing that the time was coming had allowed him to fall asleep the second his head had hit the pillow last night, and now the clock on his nightstand told him it was almost noon.

He got out of bed and opened the curtains, letting the sun spill in and blanket him in its warm glow. Closing his eyes, he bathed in its splendor. His breath was calm and deep as he got down onto his knees and spread his arms heavenward, giving thanks for not just another day but for the blessing of life. Not his, but what would be the beginning of another offering.

REGENCY ROMANCE AT ITS BEST

LORD OF CHANCE, BOOK 1 IN THE ROGUES TO RICHES SERIES

The fledgling hope building in Charlotte’s breast was more than ill-advised. The last thing she needed was Mr. Fairfax becoming involved. Not when she had no idea what their future held.
But what if they were able to resolve their legal predicament and then discovered they suited quite well? Wouldn’t it be lovely have a kind, handsome husband?
She pushed the tantalizing idea away. For now, they must stick to being friends.
“Help me to my feet, Mr. Fairfax,” she said instead.
“Oh, dear,” he gasped in mock horror. “Are we to be a stuffy married couple?”
She looked down her nose at him primly. “A lady would never use her husband’s given name without permission.”
“Then, by God, you must call me Anthony immediately. And I shall call you…”
She gazed back at him placidly.
“…Mary?” he guessed.
She pressed her lips together and shook her head.
“Sarah? Jane? Griselda Louise?”

“She was like a flightless bird, her wings clipped by every cruel word and heartless action…”

Her life’s a nightmare until the day two hunky new students, twins Phoenix and Griffin Easton, transfer to her school.  Lexus can not believe they find her attractive; the odd ball of the school.  Lexus can only think:  how’s this possible? She has never had a boyfriend, and suddenly she has two boys vying for her attention.  She has nothing to recommend her as she’s white trash.  However, Phoenix and Griffin see something in Lexus no one else sees.

Phoenix and Griffin have their own set of problems and issues, the least of which is Lexus.  Both, Phoenix and Griffin, attracted to Lexus, find she has a decidedly unusual affect upon them.  Electricity and sparks flow when Lexus touches either of them. Really, actual sparks.  Drawn to Lexus and they feel protective as well.  However, each young man’s an

Why Serial-Killer Fiction Isn’t Going Anywhere

BY CAROLYN ARNOLD

Years ago, a rumor circulated in the writing community that books about serial killers were passé. I didn’t buy it, though. Had any of these writers picked up a mystery book or watched popular shows on television? Serial killers were everywhere! And still are.

The truth is, many people have a morbid fascination with serial killers and want to know what makes them tick, to try to understand them. While people certainly have sympathy for the victims, this addiction to serial-killer fiction, if you will, is similar to that of a motorist who can’t stop looking at the car crash on the side of the road. They are drawn to watch, and let’s face it: death connects all of us. That may sound morbid, but we all face death and loss eventually.

We also know that serial killers exist in the world around us, and the threat is real. In fact, a former chief of the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit noted, “A very conservative estimate is that there are between twenty-five and fifty active serial killers in the United States” at any given time. The truth is, you may even be in contact with one without knowing it. And as it is with any piece of fiction, books involving serial killers take us into the world of the what-if. But it goes further than that: it plays up our fears and

Writing Serial-Killer Fiction

BY CAROLYN ARNOLD

The world seems to be uniquely fascinated and captivated by the mystery of serial killers. What motivates them to kill, and why do they choose certain people to be their victims? As fiction writers, we need to harness that intrigue, but we also should be very careful not to allow our work and characters to become cliché. That feat is certainly a tough one—especially since most stories have already been written!—but it can be done. It’s all about making your work extraordinary by creating your own distinct slant and personalized voice. And let’s not forget that it’s up to you to make sure your storytelling is superb.

But there’s even more to it than good writing and coming up with a unique motivation and method of operation (MO) for your serial killer. You also have to know how your investigator is going to realistically look at the case. You want to portray your main character—for example, an FBI agent—as following and working through the investigative process the way one would if he or she was living and breathing. If you don’t, you risk losing your reader, not only for that book but possibly for future ones, too.

So where do you begin when you want to write this kind of fiction? Let’s start with what constitutes a serial killer. The basic

STORY-LINE BEHIND THE SCENES BY JEN TURANO:

Behind The Scenes set in New York high society, is filled with laughter, fun, and mystery.  Permilia Griswold, wall flower of the society set, hides on the fringes of the ballrooms.   Born to a miner who stroke it rich, part of the new wealthy of New York, Permilia is a step out of time with the high society’s gentility.   Thrifty, smart, and awkward, Permilia and her step-mother are ever at odds as Permilia stumbles and humbles her way through society.

During one of her escapades, she hears a murder plot against Asher Rutherford.  Permilia’s determined to save him from himself when he does not take her warning seriously.  While behind the scenes, much more’s going on.  Come along with Permilia, Asher, and company as they ferret out the latest secrets and plots.  My reviews of romance novel, Behind The Scenes, follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING,DEVELOPMENT:

Not only is Behind The Scenes a fine romance, it has a lot of humor; I laughed repeatedly at the antics of Permilia Griswold.  Seeing high society from her perspective was refreshing.  Permilia’s awkward, uncoordinated, and let’s face it, walks to the beat of a different drummer.  As a result, she and others like her, the ones not as pretty or poised, or like Permilia hear a different drummer, find themselves the wall flowers of the balls.  How hurtful this must have been for the girls who did not have Permilia’s fortitude.  Does this bother Permilia?   Not in the least as she has other dreams and ambitions.
